We’re stoked to feature the musical stylings of our favorite local DJ, Luis from Urban Shindigs.
1. What inspired you to start your business?
I have always been interested in music. I was first introduced to drums around the 8th grade. I later taught myself how to play guitar reading tabs and jamming with friends. When bands and things didn’t work out, a friend of mine showed me how to DJ. I took to it immediately. I started to play bars, private events, and what really caught my interest was when I had friends ask to DJ their weddings. While DJ’ing a wedding, my wife would help coordinate and make sure the day went smooth, which birthed URBAN SHINDIGS. She would do the wedding planning/coordinating side of things, while I was in charge of playing the music that made everyone have a great time. I work a normal 9-5 type job, and this allowed me to show off my creative side. There is a lot of pressure to be a wedding dj, that people don’t necessarily understand; 80% of your wedding rests on your dj’s shoulders. I like the responsibility and I love the satisfaction it gives me when I nail the music/vibe the couple is looking for.
2. What is your big why?
If this is asking WHY in generalities: Why must everyone see things in black and white. It SHOULD be this or it SHOULD be that. If we could all open our minds and accept things for how they are presented without judgement right off the bat, you might be surprised in what more this world has to offer.
3. Favorite TV Shows?
I have never been into watching tv shows on the regular, but thanks to the advancement of Netflix and Hulu, I must say that I am guilty for ‘binge’ watching. I’m a sucker for anything crime drama related, especially CSI. Sometimes, just for fun, I like the old throwbacks, Wonder Years or Saved by the Bell. . . oh, and who doesn’t like Mad Men.
4. Favorite Typeface?
A graphic design friend of mine always joke about this. We wish there were a ‘Sarcastica’ font, so you can read it how I’m saying it, sarcastically.
5. One Random Fact
One summer, I had a group of friends who thought it would be a great idea to buy a tattoo gun off the internet. Mind you, we had tattoos, but we were in no way tattoo artists! Who better to be the guinea pig, than myself. I came up with the idea to do an old style toy robot. It pretty much covers from my ankle to my knee. The icing on the cake, his initials are included in the robots antenna.
