1. What inspired you to start your business?
When I was younger, I wanted to grow up and become an “artist”. Reality kind of crushed things for me when I realized that was a job that usually didn’t pay the bills. In college I discovered the wedding industry, where I was thrilled to find a community of creatives that were actually able to make a living. I loved everything the wedding industry presented, and started working with a wedding planner and thought event planning was the perfect career for me. Until I realized that position is really for a special kind of person (which I am not – MAD respect for you event planners), and really just loved the creation process, not the management. I started calligraphy on the side and was thrilled that I could base my business on doing only what I absolutely loved doing and got such a warm response. When you become really honest with yourself, the passion and quality shine through to others.
2. What is your big why?
I think my biggest why is why NOT? Building a business takes some serious guts. You put yourself in a really vulnerable position, taking a chance and sacrificing so much in hopes that you’ll be successful. No one said it would be easy, but would it be worth it? Even if you fail, the answer is always yes. So why not take the risk?
3. Favorite TV Shows?
My all time favorites would be Arrested Development, Breaking Bad and Lost.
4. Favorite Typeface?
As a calligrapher, I prefer to create my own fonts! But other than that, I love anything Molly Jacques puts out, one of my favorite hand letterers.
5. One Random Fact
Although I studied Art History in college and knew I always wanted to do something in the arts, at my last “real” job I got to the point where I was writing advanced code. I went from coding to calligraphy! Although I embrace my analytical side (and did quite well at it), I wasn’t living my passion, and that’s what pushed me to take a chance on my business.
